New Ideas on Healthy Food

Eating to stay healthy is not something we can do overnight. After a lifetime of eating on the fly, not eating at all, or eating very little, it is hard to change what we know. Even if we know it is the right thing to do we still fight ourselves over doing it. To make matters even harder we are bombarded with all types of thought on what is the proper diet for today's human body. Some ideas are just nutty in my opinion. Some ideas on diet are awesome, they make good sense. The problem is they are not economically feasible for most of us. Some ideas  on nutritionally sound eating are so new and different that is will take a while to resonate with us. That is ok though, all good things come in time. So far in this journey that I have taken I choose to keep it simple . No processed food, no fake food, no fast food. I try to buy fresh food. My garden has supplied a lot of food for my family this winter. Yes , some foods we do with out. We do not buy tomatoes this time of year. In summer , when tomatoes are ripe we will have tomatoes from the garden. That is one example of how my eating habits have changed. I would like for everyone to read the following that I took from the Planet Raw web page.  Its an idea that may be new to you, it was for me. Not sure what to make of it, it will have to resonate with me for sure...I love beans and navel oranges.
STARCHES - We do not use fillers, such as canned food, corn, rice, grain, gluten, seedless fruit, GMO's, Navel oranges, beans, carrots, bananas, dates, potatoes, pineapples, oats, cane, and kiwis, all of which are classified as Disaccharides (starchy, double bonded sugar molecule foods, genetically engineered and over hybridized, all of which impair cell rejuvenation and cause a serious strain to the endocrine system).

Planet RAW uses only fruits, vegetables, roots, leaves, nuts, seeds .

WHAT ABOUT PROTEIN? RAW foods contain all the protein your body needs. Here's the simple truth: Your body makes electricity, acid, adrenalin, serotonin & many other chemicals... hair, skin, blood, nails, bones and even protein & calcium. Everything you are made of is protein instructed by DNA to become part of an organ or bone! Your body requires food to do so; good food for good long-term use; bad (or junk) food for bad short-term use. Ask an elephant, zebra, horse, rhino, ox, bull, gorilla or giraffe how many protein shakes they've had since the beginning of time. The Brachiosaurus, weighing 200 tons, thrived on a plant-based diet. In the wild, meat-eating lions sleep 18 hours a day & live for only 18 years. Plant-eating elephants live 70 years, sleeping only 4–6 hours. The countries with the highest consumption of protein actually have the highest rates of sickness, osteoporosis & protein deficiency! Deficiency in the body usually does not stem from what is lacking, but stems from what is consumed, such as cooked, processed food!
We truly are what we eat. Let us eat what we cook and cook what we grow

Are you thinking your soil is not up to par

The very availability of packaged soil has set-up impossibly high standards of soil quality for the home gardener. Like an airbrushed centerfold, the stuff just isn't for real. Real soil is like a real woman; a little lumpy in places , with an occasional obstinate boulder or two...and more flinty minerals than fluffy additives

What is Eating Healthy?

Hello everyone.

We are very fortunate to have such amazing weather. Hope you are moving your body!

This photo is an example of raised beds and one way they can be built. There are so many ways to make raised beds. This is at the Dansko office. Nice.

Broccoli is sill coming out of my garden. What do I do with it all ? Glad you asked because I really like to talk about food and gardens.

I have made some awesome Broccoli Cheese soup in the Vitamix :
           Lightly steam the Broccoli
put in the vitamix the Broccoli and either cream, milk, broth, water. It is all about what you have on
           hand and your taste.
If there are 2 cups of the Broccoli start with 1/2 to 3/4 cup of liquid. This will also depend on how
thick or thin you would like your soup to be.
Turn on to level 10 for about 6 min.
Take off the middle cap and add your cheese . I use 1 cup extra sharp cheedar
Let this stay on for 30 seconds
You have hot Broccoli Cheese soup that quick. The idea behind using the Vitamix is that it will not cook to death the Broccoli , you still get the nutrients.

To make it on the stove you can still use the same steps. Just remember not to boil it. Get it hot so it will be pallatable and the cheese melts well.

We eat it raw too. Yumm, Yummm. Hummus or ranch dressing for dipping . In a salad is an awesome way to get Broccoli  in your meals daily.

What is the point to eating all of these vegetables? Eating good, healthy food; raw if you can, for at least 50% or more of your daily food intake will put you on your way to optimal health. If  you planted and harvested your food, I believe your spiritual and emotional health will receive an enormous overhaul as well.

Soon we will be eating radishes and peas and lettuce. They are growing like crazy! Today I picked cabbage and will be making sauerkraut with it. I will keep you posted on the garden and kraut progress.

Next time we meet I would like to put some ideas out there about how much does it cost to eat healthy?
Can we afford to eat healthy? Who are we paying so we can eat healthy? Are we being told the correct
 information?

Peace and Love,
Dahnee

How to Eat Healthy

Hello Everyone.
I still am harvesting BROCCOLI and SPINACH! They taste amazing and best of all I grew them in my back yard garden. Some I have frozen, some is shared with family and friends, and Pat (my son) and I have ate most of it. BROCCOLI and SPINACH are two of the most nutrient dense foods the body can use to stay healthy. They both are rich in antitoxins and vitamins. Grown from your own garden, without chemicals and pesticides, you know that you are getting the best food quality, at a great value, straight from a sustainable source... You!
How do we eat all of this awesome produce you might ask. Green smoothies are a wonderful way to get your "greens" in everyday (smile, it is not as bad as one might think :) ).  There are many , many ways to have a "green smoothie". This is my basic, go to for everyday, smoothie:
                                * 2 cups spinach
                                * 1 cup frozen berries (strawberries or blueberries)
                                * 1/2 cup water (more or less depending on how thick you
                                                            like your smoothie
                                * sweetener if needed (I use agave)
I put all of the ingredients in a Vitamix and in 10 sec.  have a smooth green smoothie. A magic bullet might work too, though I have not used one before.
KALE is very important in most of my smoothies too, I know... alot of people do not want to think about kale, it's ok, we will get there together. Maybe, in the future, I will do an entire blog on the benefits of kale.
Feel free to experiment, experiment, experiment !!! The idea is to get over half of your days intake of nutrition via raw , healthy, natural food. You can add a multitude of produce to you smoothie. Frozen pineapple is very good, frozen grapes, frozen bananas , an apple, carrots, broccoli, and romaine lettuce too!!! Personally, the only thing I do not care for in my smoothies is cucumbers . Smoothies are not the only way to get your greens. SALAD is always good, remember to use produce that is in season (I do not care how great those tomatoes look in the store in February they are not in season).

BROCCOLI at my house is usually ate raw in a salad or in a smoothie. Last night I made an amazing BROCCOLI cheese soup in the Vitamix.
